Voles, meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) and montane voles (Microtus montanus) in the Treasure Valley, are the small rodents responsible for the surface tunnels and grass damage Idaho homeowners discover in their lawns after the snow melts each spring. They are not mice. Voles are outdoor pests that live in turf, mulch beds, and ground cover; mice are primarily indoor pests that move into structures. The damage shows up as a network of narrow surface runways through the lawn, gnaw marks at the base of young trees and shrubs, and the occasional dead patch around a feeding site. Treatment is a combination of habitat reduction, exclusion fencing on young plantings, and trapping or bait placement in active runways.


Voles and mice are different animals with different behavior. A vole has a stocky body about 4-5 inches long, a short tail (about an inch, never more than the length of the body), small ears mostly hidden in fur, and small dark eyes. A mouse has a slender body 3-4 inches long, a long tail (about as long as the body), large prominent ears, and large dark eyes. Voles live outside in turf and ground cover; mice live primarily inside structures. If the damage is on your lawn, it is almost certainly voles. If the droppings are in your kitchen drawer, it is almost certainly a mouse.

Two vole species in Treasure Valley

  • Meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus): the more common species in irrigated Treasure Valley lawns; prefers moist, well-vegetated turf
  • Montane vole (Microtus montanus): more common in drier, higher-elevation Idaho; can appear in Treasure Valley foothill properties

Both species behave similarly from a homeowner perspective; treatment approach is the same. The distinction matters for academic ecology but rarely changes the practical pest control response.


Vole damage in an Idaho lawn is identified by three signatures: a network of narrow surface runways about an inch wide cut through the grass, typically most visible immediately after snowmelt; gnaw marks at the base of young trees, shrubs, and ornamentals where the bark has been stripped in a ring; and small open holes about the diameter of a quarter at runway junctions or near cover. The runways look like someone ran a thin garden hose across the lawn in a winding maze and then took it away.

The three damage signatures

1. Surface runways. Narrow grass-cut paths winding through turf. Width about 1 inch. Often a complex interconnected network rather than single straight paths. Most visible:
– Immediately after snowmelt in March and early April
– Along the base of fences, retaining walls, and landscape edges
– Under and around shrub bases
– Through tall grass not mowed before winter

2. Bark gnawing on young plantings. Voles strip bark at the base of young trees and shrubs, sometimes completely girdling the trunk and killing the plant. Damage characteristics:
– Bare wood exposed in a continuous ring near ground level
– Tooth marks visible in the exposed wood (small, paired chisel marks about 1/16 inch wide)
– Most severe on young fruit trees, ornamental crabapples, dogwoods, and shrubs with soft bark
– Most common in winter when the voles are tunneling under snow cover for protection

3. Open burrow entrances. Quarter-sized holes opening to shallow tunnels:
– Typically at runway junctions
– Near cover, under shrubs, along fences, at the edges of mulch beds
– Distinct from mole tunnels, which are raised soil mounds (voles do not raise soil)

Vole damage vs. mole damage

Voles and moles are frequently confused, particularly in spring. They produce different damage:

  • Voles: surface runways cut through grass at ground level; bark gnawing on young plantings; quarter-sized open holes
  • Moles: raised soil mounds (“molehills”) and raised tunnels lifting the soil; no surface runways; no bark damage; primarily insectivorous (eats grubs and earthworms, not grass or roots)

If the damage is raised soil, it is a mole. If the damage is cut grass at ground level, it is a vole.


Vole damage in Treasure Valley lawns peaks in late winter and early spring. Voles are active year-round but their most consequential damage happens November through April under snow cover and in dense ground cover, when they tunnel through turf to feed on grass and bark without being visible to predators. Most homeowners first notice the damage in March-April after snowmelt exposes the runways. By then the damage is done, the leverage for prevention is in October before the snow falls.

The vole damage calendar

  • March-April: damage discovery period, snowmelt exposes the runway network and bark damage; this is when 90% of Idaho vole calls come in
  • May-June: repair and growth period; lawn fills in over surface runways if not too severe; replanting damaged shrubs and trees
  • July-September: vole populations build through summer; damage minimal because grass is actively growing; predator pressure is highest
  • October-November: prevention leverage window, pull mulch back from tree bases, install hardware-cloth wraps on young plantings, mow short before snow, remove tall grass cover near landscape edges
  • December-February: voles tunnel under snow cover; damage occurs invisibly; nothing effective can be done until snowmelt

Vole treatment combines four actions: reduce habitat by removing tall grass cover, dense ground cover, and mulch piled against tree bases; install hardware-cloth wraps on young trees and shrubs to prevent winter girdling; trap active runways with snap traps placed perpendicular to the runway; and apply rodenticide bait stations in tamper-resistant placements where children and pets cannot reach. Reactive treatment after spring damage discovery is less effective than autumn prevention.

What works

  • Habitat reduction. Mow short before snowfall (down to 2 inches). Pull mulch back from tree bases at least 4 inches. Remove dense ground cover within 18 inches of young plantings. Trim back tall grass around landscape edges.
  • Hardware-cloth tree guards. Wrap young trees and shrubs with 1/4-inch hardware cloth from ground level up to 18 inches, set 2 inches into the soil. Single most effective protection for young fruit trees and ornamentals.
  • Snap traps in runways. Standard mouse-size snap traps baited with peanut butter or apple slice, placed perpendicular across active runways with the trigger over the runway. Cover with a flowerpot or piece of plywood to protect non-target wildlife.
  • Tamper-resistant bait stations. When trap density isn’t practical, EPA-registered rodenticide in tamper-resistant stations placed at active runway entrances. Stations must be inaccessible to children, pets, and non-target wildlife.

What doesn’t work

  • Ultrasonic repellers. No peer-reviewed evidence of effectiveness against voles.
  • Mothballs in burrows. Off-label use and ineffective. Mothball vapors do not deter voles at field concentrations and the off-label use is illegal in many states.
  • Castor-oil-based “vole repellents.” Mixed evidence at best; effect duration is short and reapplication frequency makes the cost-effectiveness poor.
  • Killing the visible vole. A surface runway with one trapped vole indicates a network with many more. Single-animal removal does not solve the problem.
